The Simi Valley Town Center teemed
with information and motivation to help
area residents choose a more active
and healthy lifestyle during the annual
Community Health & Fitness Expo on
October 6, 2012.
The event is the primary annual
fundraiser for the Free Clinic of Simi Valley,
and Simi Valley Hospital partnered with the
Free Clinic for the event.
Learning and doing.
The hospital
sponsored several booths at the event,
disseminating a variety of information
on various health topics. Along with the
information, hospital clinical volunteers
administered 300 blood glucose tests,
and members of Simi Valley Hospital’s
Volunteer Guild and clinical volunteers
dispensed 300 u vaccines.
Something for everyone.
Visitors to the annual Community Health & Fitness Expo received a variety of tips and information from the
volunteers and staff who manned Simi Valley Hospital’s educational booths, as well as entertainment, information and motivation from a large
number of other vendors and speakers at the event.
Simi Valley Hospital President and CEO
Kim Milstien has been chosen for two
voluntary leadership roles in the Hospital
Association of Southern California
(HASC). The nonprofit organization
comprises more than 170 hospitals
and health care organizations in the
region, representing more than
95 percent of the general acute market
in Southern California.

Milstien is serving as the Santa
Barbara/Ventura area representative
on the HASC board of directors and is
also chairwoman of the organization’s
Ventura County Hospital CEOs committee.
The mission of HASC is to serve the
political, economic, informational and
educational needs of hospitals and to
help improve the quality and accessibility
of health services.
“I’m very excited to have the
opportunity to serve with HASC,” Milstien
said. “The organization has been around
for 90 years and is a fantastic resource
for both learning about and in uencing
health care policy and practice. HASC’s
goals and activities align well with what
we’re all about at Simi Valley Hospital.”
HASC covers six Southern California
counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Santa
Barbara, Ventura, Riverside and San
Bernardino. The Santa Barbara/Ventura
area represents 11 hospitals, including
Simi Valley Hospital.

In addition, a number of other
organizations and vendors from around
the community displayed their wares, put
on health and tness demonstrations, and
added their knowledge and experience
about active and healthy living. A Red Cross
blood drive that coincided with the expo
collected 39 units of blood, representing
109 percent of the goal for the drive.
Healthy attention.
Sylvia Lopez, a
co-anchor at CBS2/KCAL9, was a guest
emcee at the event. Among her duties,
she interviewed ultra-endurance athlete
and author Rich Roll, who spoke two times
during the expo. CBS2 later broadcast a
story about the event to its greater Los
Angeles viewing audience.

Michelle Foster, director of Marketing &
Communication at Simi Valley Hospital.
“The people who visited the booths
were engaged and appreciative of the
information they received; we had a great
turnout for the glucose testing, the blood
drive and the u vaccines; and there were
a lot of local organizations who had the
chance to get the word out about what
they do.”
